Elon Musk expressed, “If you err even once, it’s over for you.” The sentiment “Just a single error” highlights the significant effect that the assassination of conservative advocate Charlie Kirk had on the billionaire’s feeling of safety and his method of engaging in public affairs.
Speaking on The Katie Miller Pod podcast, released on December 9, 2025, Musk revealed that the fatal shooting of Kirk has forced him to limit his public appearances, not out of a desire for privacy, but because the danger for prominent, politically polarizing figures has become perilously high.
Kirk was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, while attending an open event at Utah Valley University, an attack that federal investigators reportedly classified as a targeted, sniper-style political assassination.
Musk explained that operating in the public eye now feels like living on “hardcore mode,” where security risks are no longer theoretical but an acute, life-and-death reality.
The assassination of someone in his orbit, who was killed for his influential and controversial public platform, served as a stark and immediate reinforcement of this danger.
This incident compelled Musk to confront his own exposure as a high-profile CEO and owner of a major social media platform, leading him to significantly intensify his security protocols.
He lamented that the restrictions are not merely inconvenient but reflect a climate where political tension has become so extreme that it can turn fatal for public figures.
Despite his heightened fears, Musk attended Kirk’s memorial service in Arizona, where he publicly paid tribute, stating that Kirk was killed “because his words made a difference,” and his message was a beacon of “light” that was extinguished by “the dark,” framing the murder as a clear outcome of the political toxicity he now directly confronts.
The tragedy, therefore, did not just alter his physical movements but solidified his belief in the severity of the political divide and the critical importance of the ideological fight, which he urged his supporters to continue by backing Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA.
