Norwegian police swiftly detained a suspect following reports of gunfire at Storo Storsenter, one of Oslo’s largest shopping malls, on Monday morning.
The incident, which triggered an immediate and comprehensive emergency response, involved a 19-year-old man who was arrested at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect, reportedly armed with a shotgun and other weapons, including a baseball bat and a knife, fired a single shot into the ceiling of the communal area inside the centre.
Crucially, the police reported that no injuries were sustained by any shoppers or staff, a fortunate outcome that authorities attributed to the rapid response and containment of the situation. Adding a complex layer to the incident, police noted that the suspect had called them himself before the gunshot was fired.
The event, which police characterised as “very serious,” prompted a full evacuation of the Storo Storsenter as armed police and emergency services saturated the area, including the deployment of a helicopter. The quick action by law enforcement ensured the situation was brought under control promptly.
Following the arrest, the police confirmed that the man had been charged with grave illegal handling of firearms. While the full motive remains under investigation, police officials stated there was “nothing to suggest that he attempted to harm anyone,” despite the high potential for injury in a crowded public space.
After ensuring the area was safe and conducting thorough searches, the shopping centre was reopened later the same morning, though a visible police presence remained to reassure the public and employees. This isolated, non-fatal incident nonetheless highlights the global challenges of public safety and preparedness, even in a country like Norway, which typically maintains low rates of violent crime.
