A wave of shock and anger has reverberated through a housing society in Borivali East, Mumbai, following the arrest of a 67-year-old retired police inspector on serious charges related to the alleged sexual assault and harassment of a nine-year-old girl residing in the same building. The incident, which reportedly occurred inside the society’s lift on a Sunday evening, has cast a grim shadow over the community and raised pressing concerns about child safety even within seemingly secure residential environments. The accused, who had retired from the Mumbai Police at the rank of police inspector about a decade ago, lived in the same society with his family, making the betrayal of trust particularly profound.
The horrifying incident came to light when the young victim, a student of Class 3, managed to escape the situation and immediately confided in her mother upon reaching home. According to reports from the Kasturba Marg Police, the girl was alone in the lift when the retired officer entered. He allegedly took advantage of the confined space and the minor’s vulnerability, attempting to grope and kiss her inappropriately. The child, alarmed and traumatised by the sudden and aggressive actions of an adult neighbor, was unable to raise an immediate alarm, as the accused reportedly grabbed her. Her bravery in immediately informing her mother upon reaching a place of safety was a crucial step in bringing the alleged perpetrator to justice.
Prompt action was taken by the victim’s mother, who, along with her daughter, immediately approached the Kasturba Marg Police station to lodge a formal complaint. Acting swiftly on the complaint, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the retired officer. The charges levied against the accused include relevant and serious sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, alongside sections of the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, highlighting the severity of the alleged crime. Key to the police investigation was the examination of the housing society’s surveillance system. CCTV footage from the lift was meticulously reviewed by the investigating team, and sources indicate that this evidence corroborated the victim’s statement, providing strong support for the allegations.
Following the preliminary investigation and confirmation of the incident through electronic evidence, the retired police officer, aged 67 or 68 as per varying reports, was taken into custody. He was subsequently produced before a court, which remanded him to police custody for further inquiry. The authorities, including senior officers from the Kasturba Marg police station, confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway, including scanning all available CCTV evidence to ensure all aspects of the case are uncovered. Additionally, a medical test was conducted on the young victim as part of the established procedure in cases of sexual assault involving minors. The identity of the nine-year-old victim has been strictly withheld by the authorities in adherence to Supreme Court directives aimed at protecting the privacy and dignity of survivors of sexual assault.
The arrest of a retired police inspector on such grave charges has caused a significant stir within the residential society, with residents expressing profound anger and concern over the safety of their children. The incident serves as a stark and tragic reminder that sexual offenses against minors can occur in any setting, often at the hands of known individuals who exploit positions of trust or proximity. It underscores the critical necessity of creating and maintaining heightened awareness, vigilant security measures—such as functional and monitored CCTV in common areas like lifts—and open communication channels between children and their parents to facilitate immediate reporting of any such distressing experiences. The case now moves through the legal system, where the gravity of the charges under the POCSO Act will determine the course of justice, while the wider community grapples with the fallout of this shocking breach of trust.
