New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has announced his decision to move into Gracie Mansion, the official mayoral residence, with his wife Rama, following his inauguration on January 1, 2026.
This decision brings to an end speculation about where the incoming mayor would reside, as he was previously living in a rent-stabilized one-bedroom apartment in Astoria, Queens.
Mamdani cited two primary reasons for the relocation to the $100 million-valued, 11,000-square-foot historic estate: “our family’s safety” and the need to fully focus on “enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for.”
The move represents a significant change in lifestyle for the mayor-elect, who affectionately reflected on leaving his former home and neighborhood.
He stated they would miss the simple joys of life in Astoria, such as cooking together, sharing elevator rides with neighbors, and the vibrant multicultural atmosphere, including the “spirited conversations salary as a State Assembly member.
However, his statement emphasizes that the move to the highly secure Gracie Mansion is a necessity that will allow him to dedicate all his attention to his mayoral duties.
Gracie Mansion, built in 1799, is a Federal-style home located in Carl Schurz Park in Manhattan’s Yorkville neighborhood. It has served as the official residence for New York City mayors since 1942, with the notable exception of Michael Bloomberg, who chose to remain in his own residence.
Mamdani will be taking office as the 111th Mayor of New York City, succeeding Eric Adams, and his move into the historic residence is viewed as a practical step to ensure the security required of the position while allowing him to concentrate on the mandate he received from the voters.
